Layton Shumway went into a summer-long depression after the Utah Jazz lost to the Chicago Bulls in 1998 (he is still convinced Jordan pushed off). The experience led him to become a writer. After graduating from high school, he served a two-year church mission in Johannesburg, South Africa, which neatly coincided with the worst two years of BYU football and Jazz basketball in his lifetime. (He doesn't think it's a coincidence.)
Layton is now the copy chief for Brigham Young University's Daily Universe newspaper, and a contributing writer for Utah Jazz Blog. He is a fan of all sports, especially the Jazz, BYU football and Arsenal, and has borne witness to the many auspicious events in Utah sports history (there are more than you think). When not obsessing over what Deron Williams' player rating will be in NBA Live 08 (it had better be over 85), he can be found reading, writing, blogging, doing improv comedy and playing his bass guitar.
Layton resides in Provo, Utah.
