Agent Zero No Longer A Free Agent

The Fig Cap: "I'm getting PAID!"
It was just a matter of time before it became official - Gilbert Arenas AKA Agent Zero AKA Hibachi AKA a slew of other names re-signed with the Washington Wizards. The odd thing about this? For all the enigmatic and kooky behavior, Arenas actually cares about winning as he wanted the Wizards to re-sign Antawn Jamison first before he put his John Hancock on a contract himself. However, potentially cash-strapped to sign two excellent players, the Wizards would need to get the money somewhere. That's where Arenas comes in.
Instead of being greedy and demanding a maximum contract from the Wiz, Arenas took enough money (like $111 million is ever NOT enough money) so that the team could also re-sign Jamison. With Arenas, Jamison, and Caron Butler in tow, the Wizards will do very well... if they can all stay healthy, particularly Arenas who came back too quickly from rehab.

Baron Davis Is Back!!!
Thursday July 10, 2008

The Fig Cap: Baron Davis is coming back home to Los Angeles... it's only been about a decade in the making.
Wow, can you believe how young Baron Davis looks in that picture? That was in December 1998. He was definitely more svelte back then during his days running the UCLA Bruins offense, as well as less hairy. It's actually kind of weird not seeing a bushy beard on him. However, probably not as weird as it is for the Bay Area to not see him in a Golden State Warriors uniform.
B-Diddy is back home in Los Angeles with the Clippers.
Yes, folks, the nature of the business is change and you can check out all the changes with our 2008 NBA Offseason Movement tracker. So keep clicking it every now and then to get the latest updates.
Back to Boom Dizzle - he is exactly what the Clippers needed to join forces with Elton Brand. Oh... oops. If you didn't know, Brand's agent, David Falk, apparently didn't like the way things were going with the Clippers and basically steered Brand to the Philadelphia 76ers, which basically stinks for Davis because I'm sure he thought Brand would be there with him. However, even without Brand, Davis will love being back home and he should still excel individually as a player.
I just don't have much faith for the Clippers as a team... but welcome back home anyway, Baron.

Elton Brand Going Back East?
Tuesday July 8, 2008

The Fig Cap: "Hmm, should I go back East?"
Now that the NBA Salary Cap has been set for the 2008-09 season, many teams are now able to sign free agents, with Elton Brand, originally from New York, being target number one. Word has come out that the Philadelphia 76ers have received a verbal agreement from Brand to join the team for five years and about $80 million. Ex-teammate from both the Los Angeles Clippers and Duke University Blue Devils, Corey Maggette, will be heading to the Golden State Warriors, another team in contention with the Sixers and Clippers for the services of Brand. It's kind of obvious the Bay Area team did not get the ex-Clipper that they truly coveted.
What is the Clips and Warriors' loss is obviously the Sixers' gain. It isn't out of the question to say that Philly now instantly become Eastern Conference contenders. With the steady direction of Andre Miller, the athleticism and overall game of Andre Iguodala, board and block capabilities of Samuel Dalembert, and an up-and-coming Thaddeus Young, Brand's presence will make the nucleus of a team that had a great run during the second half of last season even better. He'll bring instant toughness and leadership. Does that remind you of anyone that did the same thing last year and helped his team to an NBA championship? Yes, I'm talking about Kevin Garnett.
However, it remains to be seen if Brand will have that particular effect on the Sixers that KG had on the Boston Celtics, but nothing is out of the realm of possibility, which makes the NBA so exciting to watch and follow!
Stay tuned for the official word coming out of, not only Philly, but league-wide as the signing moratorium is lifted tomorrow.

Playing Catch-Up On A Holiday Weekend
Sunday July 6, 2008

The Fig Cap: The "S" will probably be changing to "OKC" as in - goodbye Seattle, hello Oklahoma City!
(Queue music) In the last blog post, we talked about the 2008 NBA Draft and as predicted by most, Derrick Rose went first to the Chicago Bulls. Michael Beasley went to the Miami Heat at number two and the biggest surprise of all, Russell Westbrook went to the Seattle SuperSonics at number four.
Speaking of the SuperSonics, we'll be calling them something else next season as the Sonics will be moving to Oklahoma City. Sonics owner, Clay Bennett and the rest of his ownership group will be paying the city of Seattle $75 million in order to make the move. Seattle retains the rights to the SuperSonics name. It's basically been a foregone conclusion ever since Bennett, whose business is based in Oklahoma City, purchased the Sonics in 2006. However, there is a small ray of hope that a team can come back to Seattle, but the chances seem slim.
However, what won't be slim are a few players' bank accounts. Chris Paul agreed to an extension for four years and $68 million. Baron Davis will be leaving the Bay Area to go back home to Los Angeles with the Clippers as the two sides agreed to a five-year, $65 million deal. And because Antawn Jamison agreed to a four-year $50 million deal with the Washington Wizards, it was easier for Gilbert Arenas to also re-sign with them for six years and $111 million.
Okay, that's it for now... a quick recap of what's been going on in the NBA. I hope everyone in the U.S. had a great holiday weekend, but it's over now and I'll be around a lot more on the regular. How do you all like the redesign of About.com? Pretty awesome if you ask me!
